The tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) can be a medically necessary or purely cosmetic surgery. The procedure is usually performed after extreme weight loss or pregnancy if the stretched tissue does not return to its normal shape. The extra sagging skin of the abdomen is removed and the skin of the upper abdomen is tightened. Tightening of the muscles is also possible in the same procedure. During the procedure the navel is removed and then replaced into a proper position. There will be a scar between the hips, above the pubic hairline, and a hardly noticeable scar around the navel.
In case of a very large tummy tuck (for example if the patient has lost a considerable amount of weight with the help of a gastric band) the price might be higher and the minimum stay in Budapest longer.
If necessary, liposuction on the sides or on the upper part of the tummy can be performed as well. In some cases abdominoplasty can be performed together with either a thigh lift or an upper arm lift.
Each surgery carries its own type of risk and for further detailed information please contact us.
Facts and Questions - Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)
Q: What are the risks or complications with tummy tuck surgery?
As with all types of surgery, there are certain risks involved. The majority of side effects often prove to be temporary. Side effects can include bleeding, oedema, infections, temporary loss of sensitivity in the abdominal area, acid formation. Rarely keloid scarring may occur. Under very rare circumstances seroma or necrosis of the skin may occur.
Q: If I am a smoker, should I stop smoking before my tummy tuck?
Yes, ideally patient should stop minimum 2 weeks before surgery. Smokers can experience delays in healing. Exposure to cigarette smoke decreases the size of the blood vessels in your skin, making a smoker’s skin more sluggish to heal.
Q: Is there anything I need to do before tummy tuck surgery?
Patient must fill in the online medical questionnaire and fully state what medication they are currently taking. The surgeon will then be able to advise you if some medications need to be stopped before the surgery takes place.
Think about your diet – following a low fat healthy diet can only help you make a faster recovery. Avoiding alcohol for 14 days prior to surgery should be considered.
Think about whether you will need somebody to accompany you on your trip for your abdominoplasty. We are here to take you to the clinic and back to your hotel after the surgery and also for your post-check ups and airport transfer. However, would you feel more comfortable with somebody staying with you during your stay? Please note that all Perfect Contour patients will be given a client phone during their stay in Budapest so that a member of the Perfect Contour team will always be available should the need arise.
Q: Do I need to inform the surgeons of any pre-existing conditions prior to my tummy tuck surgery?
Yes, this is very important. The surgeon should be informed of any medication (even vitamins, especially vitamin E) you are taking and any pre-existing conditions no matter how trivial or irrelevant you might find them.
Q: How long will the tummy tuck surgery last for?
The surgery lasts 1.5 hours to 4 hours depending on the extent on the tummy tuck.
Q: How long will I need to stay in hospital after tummy tuck surgery?
Normally patients stay 2 days (1 night) after surgery (following no complications).
Q: How long will I need to stay in Budapest for after my tummy tuck?
Patients are advised to stay a minimum of 5 to 6 days in Budapest after their tummy tuck surgery.
Q: Will the stitches be removed whilst I am in Budapest?
During surgery, absorbable stitches are used, therefore there is no need for stitch removal. The stitches will gradually be absorbed in the skin. It usually takes 3 months for them to completely dissappear.
Q: Will the scars be very visible after the tummy tuck surgery?
For the first 6 weeks after the scars will be very visible and red which is perfectly normal. The scarring will gradually fade during the months after the surgery. The position of the scar will depend on the extent of the surgery (size of the abdominal area).

After the abdominoplasty surgery you will be given painkillers in the hospital to help with any pain and discomfort you might experience. Once you have had your post-op check-up, you will be given a controlled amount of painkillers to take back to your hotel to help with any discomfort you might be experiencing. In certain circumstances some patients will be given daily anti-thrombosis injections for approximately 5 days after surgery.

Q: When will I be able to shower after a tummy tuck surgery?
You will only be able to shower once the plasters covering your wounds can be removed. It is usually after two weeks from surgery date. It is very important to keep the wound area dry and clean after surgery.
Q: What kind of movement will I have after tummy tuck?
Patients are encouraged to start moving around the following day after surgery. Small and slow movements are all that should be attempted at the beginning, maybe a nice gentle walk 2 to 3 days after surgery. The patient should not attempt, under any circumstances, any strenuous exercise for a minimum of 6 weeks after surgery. The patient should not attempt to lift any heavy objects for a minimum of 3 weeks after surgery. It is very important that these steps are followed.
Q: Do I need somebody to accompany me to Budapest for my tummy tuck?
All patients will be met at the airport and taken to their hotel. A driver will take the patient for their consultation and to the clinic on the day of the surgery. The patient will also be taken back to their hotel after being discharged. However, some people prefer to have a friend or relative accompany them during their trip to keep them company.
Q: When will I be able to return to work after tummy tuck?
As a general rule the patient should not return to work for 3 weeks after an abdominoplasty surgery. After this time he or she should be fit enough to return to their work. Please note that should your job involve physical exertion you should wait for 6 weeks after surgery.

Patient Itinerary
Arrival - Budapest has only one airport called 'Ferenc Liszt Airport' and patients arrive either at Terminal 1 or 2. A hostess will wait for you at the arrivals area with your name on a board and take you to your taxi. The driver will know your destination and takes you to your accommodation. Airport transfer is complimentary. Most patients arrive in Budapest the evening before surgery and spend the first night in their hotel or apartment. You can have a late dinner but you should not eat or drink anything after midnight.
Surgery day - A driver will pick you up early morning and take you to the clinic. Please remember to bring your passport for administrative purposes. You will be settled into your room and meet your surgeon for your consultation. The surgeon will take you through the procedure, your expectations and answer and queries or questions you may have. The anesthetist will also visit you and discuss your medical questionnaire with you. He will ask you about previous surgeries, medication you may take and medical conditions. You will receive various paperwork that needs to be signed by you:
Information on your surgery Information on anaesthetic procedures Declaration of consent to surgical intervention Agency Agreement Medical Questionnaire
Upon arrival at the clinic you will have your pre op tests, followed by the consultation with your surgeon. After your consultation but before surgery you will be asked to pay for the surgery in full, either by cash or credit card. Once the test results have come through you will be taken into surgery.
Depending upon the surgery, you could spend up to two nights at the clinic. You will be checked regularly by nurses throughout the day and night and your surgeon will check on you daily. Before you are discharged the surgeon will give you a thorough check-up and after you are discharged you will be picked up and taken back to your accommodation. The clinic will provide you with adequate medication (pain relief, antibiotics if necessary and in some cases anti thrombosis medication). You will be taken for several check-ups with your surgeon before you fly back home. For most surgeries absorbable stitches are used and there is no need for stitch removal. For surgeries where non-absorbable stitches are used you will be advised when to visit your GP for stitch removal. A Perfect Contours representative will be on hand throughout your stay in Budapest. During your final check-up the surgeon will give you your discharge papers in English. Depending on the type of surgery you had you might be required to wear compression garments for 4-6 weeks after surgery. It is very important you follow the surgeon's instructions on aftercare once you return home.
On the day of your departure you will be taken to the airport (you should allow a minimum of 2 hours at the airport for check-in, security, etc.)
Your Perfect Contours contact will stay in touch with you after you have returned home.
