Breast enlargement (breast augmentation) is mostly a purely cosmetic procedure. During surgery the implants are placed either under or over the pectoral muscle. There are three possibilities for the incision: underneath the breast, underneath the nipple, in the armpit area. The position and size of the implant is discussed with the surgeon during the consultation. The 5-6 centimetre long scars are hardly visible. Even in today's highly advanced time implants don't last forever, they have to be changed every 10-15 years. Preventative cancer checks (ultrasound, mammography) can be performed normally. After breast augmentation, regular examinations are vital in order to determine that the implants are as they should be.
Each surgery carries its own type of risk and for further detailed information please contact us.
Facts and Questions - Breast Augmentation (breast enlargement)
Q: What are the risks associated with Breast Augmentation surgery?
As with all surgical interventions, there are side-effects and risks associated with breast augmentation surgery. Although rare the following complications may occur.
Leaking: like anything filled with liquid-like materials, implants can also be susceptible to leakage. However, the modern implants are made of multiple layers. In the rare case there is a leakage, the new cohesive gel-filled implants is not absorbed into the body and can easily be removed and replaced. For the saline solutions, the saline is absorbed into the body and the implant is then removed by surgery.
Capsular Contracture : after the surgery the body creates a capsule around the surface of the implant. In some cases the capsule around the implant may begin to tighten and squeeze down on the soft implant, causing the breast to feel hard. This process could happen anytime, even years after the operation itself, however it normally occurs a few months after the surgery.
Infection : if an infection occurs it is usually a few days after the surgery. Symptoms include irritation around the wound, redness, tightness, pain and fever. An infection is treated with antibiotics, however, in very rare cases the implants might have to be removed.
Please note surgery for the new implants can only be performed after a recovery period of 6 months.
Haematoma or seroma : very rare but can occur after the operation.
Temporary / permanent changes in the feeling of the nipple/breast.
Wrinkling of the breast : this may occur depending on the size of the implants and whether the when the patient looses weight.
Shifting of implants : shifting of the implants can be caused by mechanical impact or capsular contracture. Should the shape of the breast be affected, further surgery will be required.
Breast Asymmetry: the surgeon's main goal is to achieve the best symmetry possible. However, circumstances like capsular contracture, shifting of implant or posture asymmetry of the patients can cause difference on either side.
Q: Is there anything I need to do before the surgery?
Clients must fill in the online medical questionnaire and fully state what medication they are currently taking. The surgeon will then be able to advise if some of your medications need to be stopped before the surgery takes place.
Think about your diet following a low fat healthy diet can only help you make a faster recovery. Avoiding alcohol for 14 days prior to surgery should be considered.
Think about whether you will need somebody to accompany you on your trip. We are here to take you to the clinic and back to your hotel after the surgery and also for your post-check ups and airport transfer. However, would you feel more comfortable with somebody staying with you during your stay? Please note that all Perfect Contour patients will be given a client phone during their stay in Budapest so that a member of the Perfect Contour team will always be available should the need arise.
