Anaesthetics
There are different types of anaesthetic that may be used in order that your
surgeon can carry out the treatment or surgery you are having with minimum
discomfort. The different types are as follows:
|
General Anaesthetic
This is a full anaesthetic, carried out under the care of a qualified anaesthesiologist. It enables the surgeon to carry out the operation without any discomfort to you, or knowledge that the operation is taking place. Operations carried out under general anaesthetic include an overnight stay in hospital.
|
Local Anaesthetic
The surgeon injects a numbing solution to the area that is being treated to minimise any discomfort during the operation. Sedation may be given but you are fully awake during the treatment and in most cases be discharged the same day.
|
Epidural Anaesthetics
Pain medication will be given through a small tube, called an epidural catheter, placed in your back. An anaesthesiologist will decide on the type of pain medication, how much and how often you receive it.
